Many dog lovers are very kind to their canine friends. In addition to sharing their home with their dogs, some pet owners also tend to share their meals. They believe there is nothing wrong with sharing their favorite food with their canine companion. However, that is not always true. In fact, this act of kindness can even jeopardize your dog’s health.

Most foods you eat, such as veggies and fruits, that digest effortlessly in your stomach can cause havoc in your canine’s body, leading to severe health issues. However, that does not mean dogs cannot eat everything we eat. So, what fruits can dogs eat? What vegetables can dogs eat? There are some healthy fruits and vegetables dogs can eat. In this guide, we will walk you through a list of things your dog should not eat.

Foods, Fruits, and Vegetables Your Dog Cannot Eat

1.    Almonds

You should never feed or allow your dog to eat almonds. While almonds are not necessarily toxic, they can tear your dog’s windpipe or block their oesophagus if not properly chewed. Salted almonds tend to pose more threats, as they can boost water retention, which is detrimental to canines susceptible to heart disease.

2.    Avocado

Avocado is not among the safe fruits for dogs. This fruit contains persin, and excess of it can cause diarrhea or vomiting in dogs. The seed, leaves, bark, and fruit itself contain persin, so your dog should stay away completely.

3.    Onions, Chives, and Garlic

The onion family, whether cooked, raw, or dry, is unsafe for dogs to consume, as it can cause red blood cell damage or gastrointestinal irritation.

4.    Undercooked/Raw Eggs, Meat, and Bones

Raw eggs and meat can contain bacteria like E. coli and Salmonella, which are harmful to humans and pets. There is also an enzyme known as avidin in raw eggs; it reduces biotin absorption, causing coat and skin problems in dogs. While a dog eating a raw bone might look healthy and natural, it is not safe for domestic pets, as they might sustain severe injuries or choke on it.

5.    Peaches and Plums

Can dogs eat plums? No! Plums and peaches are not inherently bad for dogs. However, the pits in these stone fruits are dangerous for dogs. If the pit enters your dog’s stomach or throat, it can result in gastrointestinal obstruction or choking.

6.    Alcohol

Alcohol is not suitable for a dog’s brain and liver; the same effect it has on humans. Unlike humans, it takes just a small quantity of alcohol to hurt dogs. A little wine, liquor, beer, or food with alcohol can drastically affect your dog.

7.    Tea, Coffee, and Other Caffeine

Caffeine is not something you would want your dog to have – at least not deliberately. Keep your dog away from tea and coffee, including the grounds and the beans. Colas, chocolate, cocoa, and energy drinks are also not good for them. Some pain killers and cold medicines contain caffeine – you should avoid them.

8.    Star Fruits

Can dogs eat start fruits? No! Start fruits are deadly to dogs and cats. These fruits contain soluble calcium oxalates that bind with calcium in the body. If your dog eats plenty of it, it might suffer acute renal failure due to a decrease in calcium.

9.    Chikoo

Can dogs eat chikoo? Chikoo has rough skin and contains saponins, which can cause vomiting and discomfort in dogs.

10.   Macadamia Nuts

Macadamia nuts are not safe for dogs to consume. These nuts are poisonous to dogs and can cause inability to walk, increased body temperature, lethargy, and vomiting.

11.    Chocolate

Chocolate contains theobromine which is poisonous to dogs. Theobromine will negatively affect your dog’s metabolism so be sure to keep a good eye on your dog if they accidentally eat chocolate.
