Summer is not an easy season for dogs, especially in places like Singapore where summer is all year round. The recent heatwave in Singapore is not pet-friendly, and you want to do everything possible to ensure your canine friend is comfortable. For you, beating the heat might be lots of ice cream and air conditioning, but it means something else for dogs. In this guide, we will walk you through some tricks and tips to help your pet beat the heat.

Tips for Beating the Heat

The rising temperatures does not only affect humans; dogs and other pets also have their fair share of the effect. Heat affects canines in several ways. A dog can suffer heat rashes, appetite loss, dehydration, and even heat stroke (in severe cases). Here are helpful tips to keep your dog calm, cool, and happy as temperatures increase.

1.    Provide a Constant Supply of Drinking Water

One of the significant effects of rising temperatures is dehydration. Dehydration is not something you want your dog to suffer, as it can be dire in dogs. To prevent your dog from suffering dehydration and the issues associated with it, provide them with a constant supply of drinking water. Ensure your pup has 24/7 access to fresh and clean drinking water. The heat will increase your dog’s appetite for water, causing them to drink frequently. When you go out for walks, go with a water bottle to keep them hydrated. Your canine friend would also appreciate an ice cube or two on scorching days. In all, you want to ensure your dog does not have limited access to water. The water should always be fresh and clean.

2.    Change Timings of Exercise on Sunny Days

Exercise is essential for dogs, as it helps them maintain optimal weight and enhance their overall health. Nevertheless, you may have to cut down on the exercises on hot days. You can also adjust the duration and intensity of the exercise depending on the temperature. The best time to exercise on hot days is in the morning and evening. Avoid taking your dog on your regular exercise routine in the hot midday sun. Your canine friend can burn their paws walking on hot surfaces like sand and concrete.

3.    A Cooling Bandana

These Cooling bandanas use a top of the line crystal polymer technology that activate by simply soaking the bandana in cold water for 10 minutes, which will cause the crystal beads to absorb the water and expand to become icy cool, then gently remove excess water and tie around your pets neck and provide them with refreshing coolness and lowering their body temperature. When the cooling effects wear off, soak it in water again and reuse!

4.    Feed Them More Wet Food

The hot days are a great time to switch from dry kibbles to wet foods. Dogs tend to eat fewer kibbles in the summer, and if your dog is in this category, we recommend you switch to wet meals. Wet dog foods contain plenty of moisture to aid digestion. Your dog will not feel overly thirsty when on wet food.
